Nabopolassar

Nabopolassar
(reigned 626-605 b.c.)
The first king of the Neo-Babylonian, or Chaldean, dynasty, the last native-born ruling family of ancient Babylonia. Nabopo-lassar (or Nabu-apla-usur) began his career as an Assyrian-appointed government official in Sealand in southern Mesopotamia. After the death of Assyria's last strong king, Ashurbanipal, however, Nabopolassar felt confident enough to assert himself as ruler of Sealand and proceeded to fight the Assyrians stationed in Babylonia. Then Nabopolassar wisely made an alliance with Cyaxares II, king of Media. Their combined armies ravaged Assyria and in 612 b.c. besieged and captured Nineveh. The fall of the Assyrian Empire allowed Nabopolassar to declare himself king of all Babylonia. He had only begun to deal with threats posed by the Egyptians in Syria-Palestine when he died, leaving the throne to his son, Nebuchadnezzar II.
